‘Activisten coördineren het geweld’ bij ontruiming ‘Jungle’ in Calais

Het illegale migrantenkamp in Calais, de ‘Jungle’, wordt vandaag ontruimd. Migranten en activisten botsten gisteren al met de politie. Tenten en hutten werden in brand gestoken uit protest.

Voor de tweede keer dit jaar wordt het kamp volledig platgegooid. Een aantal kindmigranten mocht de oversteek maken naar Groot-Brittannië, en de eerste bus met migranten is al vertrokken uit de kustplaats.

‘Activisten coördineren geweld en agressie’

Activisten van niet-gouvernmentele organisaties (ngo’s) zijn boos op de politie, die het kamp niet zou mogen ontruimen. De organisatie No Borders zou zelfs met walkietalkies rondlopen en ‘het geweld coördineren’.

‘Mensen van de organisatie No Borders vallen iedereen aan. We hebben al meerdere gewonden gezien,’ zegt een hulpverlener van Immigrant Shelter tegen de Britse krant de Daily Mail. ‘Ze doen me denken aan hooligans die met de politie vechten. Mensen komen hier voor het geweld, het heeft niets te maken met migratie.’

Einde Jungle

De migranten worden over Frankrijk verspreid en opgevangen in lokale centra. Naar schatting worden zo’n 7.000 migranten uit Calais gehaald en op bussen gezet. Naar schatting waren meer dan 1.200 agenten op de been om de Jungle plat te gooien, en de migranten in toom te houden.

In Calais liep de spanning de afgelopen maanden op: vrachtwagenchauffeurs werden dagelijks bedreigd met knuppels en messen. Migranten in Calais, vooral jonge mannen uit Sudan, gooiden vuurblokkades op de snelwegen, en bedreigden chauffeurs met geweld, hopend op een rit naar Dover in Groot-Brittannië.
